Binaries Newsgroups - How does it work ?
Newsgroups have been created only in order to deliver texts. Nevertheless the last few years, development of
methods/tools allows to share binaries.
Principle is easy : before posting a binary file, this file should be first converted in text with coding methods (uuencode, base64, yenc...).
Most of Newsgroups servers limit the articles length : that's the reason why, for posting only a binary file, sometimes it
requires a lot of articles. Fortunately softwares exist to automate posting (ex. Power-Post) and recovering (ex. Grabit)
of Binaries.
For bulky binaries files > 30 Mo (video, music, softwares...), before encoding in text format,
you must reduce it in several RAR files of 14 Mo with the software Winrar.
It allows to reduce the binaries files length for posting and using PAR/PAR2 files too.
PAR/PAR2 files are used to rebuild RAR files missing or incompletes. For instance, you want to download a video with
48 RARs but one is missing, you can download only one PAR file to recovery the missing record by using a repair software
like QuickPar. 1 PAR file can reconstruct whatever missed RAR file but if 2 RAR files are missed you need 2 PAR files
to reconstruct them. Usually, the amount of PAR files corresponds to 10% of RAR files, which is most of the time enough.
PAR2 files are better than PAR files, with them you can repair damaged files and not only missed files. For instance you can
use the QuickPar software to use PAR2 files.
I strongly advise you to read the tutorial "Download binaries".
