Newsgroups are articles (messages) based on a set of protocoles (cf. Usenet) which allows to generate, stock and recover them. These articles can be exchanged with Internet users all over the world.

Newsgroups are classified in accordance with a system which allows to easily find the collection of articles whished. Computer Newsgroups mostly begin with comp.* followed by a hierarchy of names :
  • comp.sys.mac
  • comp.mail.sendmail
  • comp.lang.java.help
  • comp.lang.c++
The last few years collections of articles called "Binaries" appeared, which permit to send and collect images, softwares and videos. Binaries Newsgroups mostly begin with alt.binaries.* followed by a hierarchy of names :

Newsgroups operate in broadcasting. A sending message (post) will be broadcast towards all Newsgroups
servers in the world. Moreover, posts are sent for a limited length of time, it depends on Newsgroups providers.

In order to read and send posts in Newsgroups, you need a Newsgroups software available for simple posts or binaries.

For an easy search in Newsgroups (without searching in all collections of articles), Web sites exist which list the contents of English-speaking Newsgroups : Indexers.
